In frame and panel door construction, the vertical components are referred to as stiles. Stiles form the sides of the door frame and are essential for providing structural support and stability. They connect with the horizontal components, known as rails, at the top and bottom of the door. The stiles are critical in maintaining the overall integrity of the door, ensuring it can withstand the loads and use over time.

Understanding the terminology in door construction is crucial, as it helps in design, communication, and implementation of construction details, ensuring that the components are properly specified and installed. In this context, the other terms refer to different parts of the door; rails are the horizontal members, panels are the flat sections between stiles and rails, and cross rails are typically used in specific designs to provide additional structural support. Therefore, knowing that stiles are the vertical components is vital for anyone involved in interior design or construction.
